At 8'x4' and completed in 4 hours, this is by far the biggest I've ever worked. It posed some new challenges but was a ton of fun. Here's a time lapse GIF of the progression from start to finish.

Illustratorade logo concept

It's a little premature, perhaps, but in anticipation of my first college teaching gig this Spring, I've been gearing up to do some quick tutorials on Adobe Illustrator software. I felt like a bit of branding couldn't hurt for the series, so I checked and low and behold, www.ILLUSTRATORADE.com was available! Sure, it's a mouthful, but I think it has a nice ring to it! I'm guessing this will show it's face eventually as a separate blog within my site, devoted specifically to drawing and software

Better On Vinyl - Adventures in Illustrator pt.3

This week's adventure was less of an exploration of new tools, and more of a personal stretch using illustrated type and applying it to some of the art built last week. I'm not a vinyl purist, per se, but I do love listening to records (we even rock a turntable at the office now) and thought the phrase 'Better on Vinyl' made for a fun logo / label design. However, all in all I learned a lot about it's quirks and limitations, and was able to apply some of what I learned yesterday as well. In this case, rather than following an existing tutorial, I decided on my own custom vintage turntable. I also made my own hand-drawn tiling woodgrain pattern and plaid speaker mesh. Can't say I wasn't met with some

Adventures in Illustrator pt.1

Snowed in during the North Texas Ice-pocalypse of 2013, and in preparation to teach my first college course next semester, I decided to bundle up and hunker down with some of my lesser used Adobe Illustrator functions. Today's adventure: the gradient mesh tool. Some people go crazy with the gradient mesh tool, spending hundreds of hours to create photo-real portraits and other insanely detailed images. That seems a little excessive to me, but maybe that's because I'm still stuck drawing fruit

Drew Struzan - Classic Poster Art

I recently watched a fantastic documentary about perhaps the greatest poster artist there ever was, Drew Struzan. Believe me, you already know and love his work. It likely rests comfortably in your heart and mind without you even knowing the man who made it possible. His poster images are so iconic and flawlessly painted that they rival Norman Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers as timeless American master paintings. Benefitting the My Possibilities charity day program for adults with special needs, ArtCon9 offered me the chance to create an original work on 18x18 wood panel during an all-day Saturday work event, where I joined practically every artist friend and colleague in the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. The following Saturday held the charity auction itself, which was accompanied by delicious food trucks, DJs,

Welcome to the new Albright Illustration site!

Hey you!
